Triumph card trick
This classic trick, popularized by the legendary magician Dai Vernon, never fails to leave spectators in awe and wonder.
1. The Setup: to begin the Triumph Card Trick, you must secretly divide the deck into two parts – one half with all the cards facing one way and the other half with cards facing the opposite way. A common method is to shuffle the deck thoroughly, ensuring that the cards are sufficiently mixed. Then, during the shuffle, subtly memorize the bottom card of the deck. Once memorized, perform a controlled shuffle, maintaining the bottom card's position.
2. The Reveal: now that the deck is ready, the real magic begins. Ask a spectator to select any card from the deck and remember it. After the spectator returns the card to the deck, give the deck one or two more shuffles, ensuring not to disturb the setup you've created. As a magician, you must perform this step with confidence, creating the illusion that the cards are genuinely being mixed.
3. The Triumph: with the deck shuffled, hold it with one hand, and using the other, spread the cards face down across the table or your hand. At this moment, the magic takes center stage. As you explain that you will now attempt to separate the selected card from the face-up and face-down cards, run through the deck quickly, separating the face-up cards from the face-down ones.
4. The Reversal: once the face-up and face-down cards are separated, square up the deck again, taking care not to disturb the orientation of the cards. With a magical gesture and a captivating display of showmanship, announce that the impossible has been achieved. Spread the deck once more, revealing that all the cards have magically righted themselves, except for one – the spectator's chosen card.
